Photojournalism

This is a picture I took for my Photojournalism class. I needed a picture of a person doing something and their face needed to be showing but not looking directly into the camera. This is a picture of my grandfather as he watered the plants all around his house. The picture, in my opinion, isn’t great. It could definitely be a lot better. Overall the picture is really dark and it is a bit grainy looking. I do like his expression though. He did not stop at all what he was doing and it made for a good picture opportunity.

200mm

This is one of the pictures that I took down by my grandparent’s pond. I was driving past and I saw the two geese hanging around and since I had a 200mm lens with me I decided to take a picture of them. I wanted to use a longer lens to get a picture of them because whenever I got close they started getting defensive so I backed off. I like how the picture turned out except that the front goose is a little out of focus. Since the back goose is in focus, however, I still like the picture.

Dark Field

This is the second of two images of glass that I took for my product lighting class. It’s a photograph of a dark field lit glass. This image was made by setting up a white background. I then set up a gobo on a Matthews stand directly behind the glass and in front of the white background so that the black just filled the frame. I then lit only the white background, which caused a white rim effect on the glass. I found this one a little harder to do than the bright field picture but I like the effect and outcome of the dark field better. It’s more dramatic.

Bright Field

This is one of two images of glass that I took for my product lighting class. It’s a photograph of a bright field lit glass. The way I took this bright field picture was I set up a white background a little ways behind the glass. I then put two black boards on either side of the glass. I then lit only the background (I used two Tungsten hot lights) and made sure that none of the light hit the glass, otherwise it would leave a glare. I thought it was fun to do. It’s a very cool but simple technique for photographing glass.

Film Scanner

This is for an assignment for my Digital Imaging class. Firstly, this is actually a photograph that I took on an Mamiya RB67 last year for my design class. My assignment for the Digital Imaging class was to use a film scanner to make a digital copy of it. The top picture is the digital copy without any editing done to it. The image below is after I went in and fixed it up a little in photoshop. I really like how it turned out and I love the look of film. I thought this was really fun and I would love to do it again.

Printing

This is a photograph of my Grandparents cat that I took for my Custom Color Printing class. The assignment was to print the picture on three different types of paper so we had to keep changing the picture so it would look right on the different types of paper. I did this by making test strips first. I like the way the picture turned out. When I printed it for the first time I was amazed at how it looked right on the computer but the print looked dark and not at all like it did on the computer screen. It was fun learning how to fix that so that I could make a good professional looking print.
